DLocal Limited (NASDAQ:DLO) Shares Slammed 28% But Getting In Cheap Might Be Difficult Regardless
DLocal Limited (NASDAQ:DLO) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 43% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, DLocal's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.6x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, DLocal's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as DLocal's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 19% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 56% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 30% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why DLocal is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
Despite the recent share price weakness, DLocal's P/E remains higher than most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that DLocal maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
