XWELL, Inc. (NASDAQ:XWEL) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks After Plunging 29%
XWELL, Inc. (NASDAQ:XWEL) shares have retraced a considerable 29% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 65% share price decline.
After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies operating in the United States' Consumer Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.5x, you may consider XWELL as an attractive investment with its 0.2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How XWELL Has Been Performing
For example, consider that XWELL's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as XWELL's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 18% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 246% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 15% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that XWELL's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On XWELL's P/S
XWELL's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Consumer Services companies. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
Our examination of XWELL revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
