There May Be Reason For Hope In Golden Entertainment's (NASDAQ:GDEN) Disappointing Earnings
Golden Entertainment, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GDEN) stock was strong despite it releasing a soft earnings report last week. Our analysis suggests that investors may have noticed some promising signs beyond the statutory profit figures.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
For anyone who wants to understand Golden Entertainment's profit beyond the statutory numbers, it's important to note that during the last twelve months statutory profit was reduced by US$7.1m due to unusual items. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Golden Entertainment to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.

An Unusual Tax Situation
Having already discussed the impact of the unusual items, we should also note that Golden Entertainment received a tax benefit of US$4.4m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Golden Entertainment's Profit Performance
In its last report Golden Entertainment received a tax benefit which might make its profit look better than it really is on a underlying level. But on the other hand, it also saw an unusual item depress its profit. Given the contrasting considerations, we don't have a strong view as to whether Golden Entertainment's profits are an apt reflection of its underlying potential for profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
