FAT Brands Inc. (NASDAQ:FAT) has announced that it will pay a dividend of US$0.13 per share on the 1st of June. The dividend yield will be 11% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. FAT Brands' stock price has reduced by 46% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

FAT Brands' Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Despite not generating a profit, FAT Brands is still paying a dividend. It is also not generating any free cash flow, we definitely have concerns when it comes to the sustainability of the dividend.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 38.7% over the next year. While it is good to see income moving in the right direction, it still looks like the company won't achieve profitability. Unfortunately, for the dividend to continue at current levels the company definitely needs to get there sooner rather than later.
FAT Brands' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, the dividend has been unstable but with a relatively short history, we think it may be a bit early to draw conclusions about long term dividend sustainability. Since 2018, the first annual payment was US$0.38, compared to the most recent full-year payment of US$0.52. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 8.1% a year over that time. A reasonable rate of dividend growth is good to see, but we're wary that the dividend history is not as solid as we'd like, having been cut at least once.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though FAT Brands' EPS has declined at around 72% a year. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future. Over the next year, however, earnings are actually predicted to rise, but we would still be cautious until a track record of earnings growth can be built.
The company has also been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 11% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Trying to grow the dividend when issuing new shares reminds us of the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus - perpetually pushing a boulder uphill. Companies that consistently issue new shares are often suboptimal from a dividend perspective.
FAT Brands' Dividend Doesn't Look Great
Overall, while some might be pleased that the dividend wasn't cut, we think this may help FAT Brands make more consistent payments in the future. The company's earnings aren't high enough to be making such big distributions, and it isn't backed up by strong growth or consistency either. Overall, the dividend is not reliable enough to make this a good income stock.
