When you see that almost half of the companies in the Hospitality industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.3x, DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ:DKNG) looks to be giving off strong sell signals with its 4.4x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has DraftKings Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, DraftKings has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as DraftKings' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 57% gain to the company's top line. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 22% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 11% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that DraftKings' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On DraftKings' P/S

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look into DraftKings shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
