What You Can Learn From DoorDash, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DASH) P/S

DoorDash, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DASH) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.9x may look like a poor investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Hospitality industry in the United States have P/S ratios below 1.6x. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How DoorDash Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for DoorDash as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to persist, which has raised the P/S. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For DoorDash?

DoorDash's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 123% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 18% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 13% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that DoorDash's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From DoorDash's P/S?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of DoorDash's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
