Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 10th of September to $1.12, which will be 1.8% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $1.10. This makes the dividend yield 3.1%, which is above the industry average.

Target's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Target's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 25.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 43% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Target Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The dividend has gone from an annual total of $1.72 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of $4.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 9.8% per annum over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.

Target Could Grow Its Dividend

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Target has impressed us by growing EPS at 9.2% per year over the past five years. The company is paying a reasonable amount of earnings to shareholders, and is growing earnings at a decent rate so we think it could be a decent dividend stock.

We Really Like Target's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Target is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
