YETI Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:YETI) Stocks Shoot Up 25% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable
YETI Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:YETI) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 15% is also fairly reasonable.
After such a large jump in price, YETI Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.3x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, YETI Holdings has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like YETI Holdings' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 133%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 14% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.9% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that YETI Holdings' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
YETI Holdings' P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that YETI Holdings maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
