Tapestry (NYSE:TPR) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At $0.40

The board of Tapestry, Inc. (NYSE:TPR) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 14% on the 22nd of September to $0.40, up from last year's comparable payment of $0.35. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Tapestry's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Before making this announcement, Tapestry's dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.

Analysts expect a massive rise in earnings per share in the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate that the payout ratio could reach 21%, which is in a comfortable range for us.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from $1.35 total annually to $1.40. Dividend payments have grown at less than 1% a year over this period. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.

Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Tapestry has been growing its earnings per share at 26% a year over the past five years. Although earnings per share is up nicely Tapestry is paying out 166% of its earnings as dividends, which we feel is borderline unsustainable without extenuating circumstances.

Our Thoughts On Tapestry's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Tapestry is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
