Possible Bearish Signals With PulteGroup Insiders Disposing Stock
The fact that multiple PulteGroup, Inc. (NYSE:PHM) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At PulteGroup
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & CFO, Robert O’Shaughnessy, for US$7.7m worth of shares, at about US$66.90 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$81.45). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 39% of Robert O’Shaughnessy's holding.

Insider Ownership Of PulteGroup
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that PulteGroup insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$122m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The PulteGroup Insider Transactions Indicate?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded PulteGroup shares in the last quarter. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of PulteGroup insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
