Generally, when a single insider buys stock, it is usually not a big deal. However, when several insiders are buying, like in the case of Topgolf Callaway Brands Corp. (NYSE:MODG), it sends a favourable message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Topgolf Callaway Brands Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when President Oliver Brewer bought US$349k worth of shares at a price of US$10.05 per share. Even though the purchase was made at a significantly lower price than the recent price (US$15.03), we still think insider buying is a positive. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Topgolf Callaway Brands insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. They paid about US$11.12 on average. To my mind it is good that insiders have invested their own money in the company. But we must note that the investments were made at well below today's share price.
