Acushnet Holdings (NYSE:GOLF) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. So when we looked at Acushnet Holdings (NYSE:GOLF) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Acushnet Holdings:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = US$260m ÷ (US$2.0b - US$483m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
So, Acushnet Holdings has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Leisure industry average of 20%.

How Are Returns Trending?
Acushnet Holdings is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 53% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
What We Can Learn From Acushnet Holdings' ROCE
To bring it all together, Acushnet Holdings has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. Since the stock has returned a staggering 165% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
