Universal Electronics Inc.'s (NASDAQ:UEIC) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Universal Electronics Inc. (NASDAQ:UEIC) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 26% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 63% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, when close to half the companies operating in the United States' Consumer Durables industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.7x, you may still consider Universal Electronics as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Universal Electronics Has Been Performing
Recent times haven't been great for Universal Electronics as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Universal Electronics would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Whilst it's an improvement, it wasn't enough to get the company out of the hole it was in, with revenue down 31% overall from three years ago. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 12% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 1.7%, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Universal Electronics is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Universal Electronics' P/S
Universal Electronics' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Universal Electronics' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Universal Electronics' poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
