Nephros, Inc. (NASDAQ:NEPH) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 40% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 157% in the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Nephros is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.2x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Consumer Durables industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Nephros Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for Nephros as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Nephros' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 34% gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 44% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 22% during the coming year according to the dual analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 0.9% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that Nephros' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Nephros shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our look into Nephros shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
