Waste Connections (NYSE:WCN) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Waste Connections, Inc. (NYSE:WCN) has announced that the dividend on 20th of November will be increased to $0.35, which will be 11% higher than last year's payment of $0.315 which covered the same period. This takes the annual payment to 0.7% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.
Waste Connections' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Waste Connections' earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 176.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 22% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Waste Connections Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
Waste Connections' dividend has been pretty stable for a little while now, but we will continue to be cautious until it has been demonstrated for a few more years. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from $0.387 total annually to $1.26. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 14% per annum over that time. Waste Connections has been growing its dividend quite rapidly, which is exciting. However, the short payment history makes us question whether this performance will persist across a full market cycle.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that Waste Connections has been growing its earnings per share at 25% a year over the past five years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Waste Connections could prove to be a strong dividend payer.
We Really Like Waste Connections' Dividend
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Waste Connections is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
