When you see that almost half of the companies in the Commercial Services industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.3x, MSA Safety Incorporated (NYSE:MSA) looks to be giving off strong sell signals with its 3.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does MSA Safety's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

MSA Safety's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this modest revenue performance will accelerate. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

How Is MSA Safety's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, MSA Safety would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 37% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 4.6% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 10% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that MSA Safety's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What Does MSA Safety's P/S Mean For Investors?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've concluded that MSA Safety currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its forecast growth is lower than the wider industry. The weakness in the company's revenue estimate doesn't bode well for the elevated P/S, which could take a fall if the revenue sentiment doesn't improve. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
