Stem, Inc.'s (NYSE:STEM) Shares Bounce 55% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Stem, Inc. (NYSE:STEM) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 55% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 45% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, Stem may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Electrical industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.3x and even P/S higher than 6x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Stem Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Stem's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Stem's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 64%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 2.8% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 12% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Stem's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Stem's P/S?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Stem's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As expected, our analysis of Stem's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
