These 4 Measures Indicate That SiteOne Landscape Supply (NYSE:SITE) Is Using Debt Reasonably Well
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We note that SiteOne Landscape Supply, Inc. (NYSE:SITE) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the more important question is: how much risk is that debt creating?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.
How Much Debt Does SiteOne Landscape Supply Carry?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of December 2024 SiteOne Landscape Supply had US$388.2m of debt, an increase on US$372.9m, over one year. However, it does have US$108.8m in cash offsetting this, leading to net debt of about US$279.4m.
How Strong Is SiteOne Landscape Supply's Balance Sheet?
According to the last reported balance sheet, SiteOne Landscape Supply had liabilities of US$640.8m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$838.1m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had US$108.8m in cash and US$559.4m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$810.7m.
Since publicly traded SiteOne Landscape Supply shares are worth a total of US$5.51b, it seems unlikely that this level of liabilities would be a major threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).
While SiteOne Landscape Supply's low debt to EBITDA ratio of 0.82 suggests only modest use of debt, the fact that EBIT only covered the interest expense by 6.5 times last year does give us pause. But the interest payments are certainly sufficient to have us thinking about how affordable its debt is. But the bad news is that SiteOne Landscape Supply has seen its EBIT plunge 18% in the last twelve months. We think hat kind of performance, if repeated frequently, could well lead to difficulties for the stock. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But our final consideration is also important, because a company cannot pay debt with paper profits; it needs cold hard cash. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. That puts it in a very strong position to pay down debt.
Our View
When it comes to the balance sheet, the standout positive for SiteOne Landscape Supply was the fact that it seems able to convert EBIT to free cash flow confidently. But the other factors we noted above weren't so encouraging. In particular, EBIT growth rate gives us cold feet. Considering this range of data points, we think SiteOne Landscape Supply is in a good position to manage its debt levels. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet.
