Proto Labs' (NYSE:PRLB) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock ascends 8.9% this past week
Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. For example, after five long years the Proto Labs, Inc. (NYSE:PRLB) share price is a whole 63% lower. That is extremely sub-optimal, to say the least. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 15% in the last three months. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 10% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.
On a more encouraging note the company has added US$68m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the five-year loss for shareholders.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Looking back five years, both Proto Labs' share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 22% per year. The share price decline of 18% per year isn't as bad as the EPS decline. So the market may previously have expected a drop, or else it expects the situation will improve. With a P/E ratio of 50.38, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Proto Labs shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 12% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 10% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.
