To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So when we looked at nVent Electric (NYSE:NVT) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for nVent Electric:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.097 = US$402m ÷ (US$4.8b - US$612m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Thus, nVent Electric has an ROCE of 9.7%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Electrical industry average of 8.0%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For nVent Electric Tell Us?
nVent Electric has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 21% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
The Bottom Line
As discussed above, nVent Electric appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. And with a respectable 92% awarded to those who held the stock over the last three years, you could argue that these developments are starting to get the attention they deserve. In light of that, we think it's worth looking further into this stock because if nVent Electric can keep these trends up, it could have a bright future ahead.
