An Unusual Tax Situation

We can see that nVent Electric received a tax benefit of US$68m. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. The receipt of a tax benefit is obviously a good thing, on its own. However, our data indicates that tax benefits can temporarily boost statutory profit in the year it is booked, but subsequently profit may fall back. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal.

That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.

Our Take On nVent Electric's Profit Performance

As we have already discussed nVent Electric reported that it received a tax benefit, rather than paying tax, in the last year. As a result we don't think its profit result, which includes that tax-boost, is a good guide to its sustainable profit levels. Because of this, we think that it may be that nVent Electric's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But at least holders can take some solace from the 42% EPS growth in the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly.
