The Return Trends At MRC Global (NYSE:MRC) Look Promising

Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at MRC Global (NYSE:MRC) so let's look a bit deeper.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on MRC Global is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.17 = US$191m ÷ (US$1.9b - US$783m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

Therefore, MRC Global has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Trade Distributors industry average of 13% it's much better.

So How Is MRC Global's ROCE Trending?

MRC Global has not disappointed in regards to ROCE growth. We found that the returns on capital employed over the last five years have risen by 154%. The company is now earning US$0.2 per dollar of capital employed. Interestingly, the business may be becoming more efficient because it's applying 41% less capital than it was five years ago. If this trend continues, the business might be getting more efficient but it's shrinking in terms of total assets.

For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Effectively this means that suppliers or short-term creditors are now funding 42% of the business, which is more than it was five years ago. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.

What We Can Learn From MRC Global's ROCE

From what we've seen above, MRC Global has managed to increase it's returns on capital all the while reducing it's capital base. Given the stock has declined 37% in the last five years, this could be a good investment if the valuation and other metrics are also appealing. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
