Cadre Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:CDRE) Popularity With Investors Is Clear

With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33x Cadre Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:CDRE) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 19x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Cadre Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Cadre Holdings' Growth Trending?

Cadre Holdings' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 10%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 17% each year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Cadre Holdings' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Cadre Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Cadre Holdings (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you might also be able to find a better stock than Cadre Holdings. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
