Satellogic Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SATL) Share Price Is Still Matching Investor Opinion Despite 26% Slump

The Satellogic Inc. (NASDAQ:SATL) share price has softened a substantial 26% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. The good news is that in the last year, the stock has shone bright like a diamond, gaining 121%.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given around half the companies in the United States' Aerospace & Defense industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may still consider Satellogic as a stock to avoid entirely with its 20.5x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Satellogic's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Satellogic certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to outperform the wider market, which has seemingly got people interested in the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Satellogic's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Satellogic's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 102% last year. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 19%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

In light of this, it's understandable that Satellogic's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the wider industry.

What Does Satellogic's P/S Mean For Investors?

Even after such a strong price drop, Satellogic's P/S still exceeds the industry median significantly. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Satellogic revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its high P/S, given they look better than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident revenue aren't under threat. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
