Kornit Digital Ltd. (NASDAQ:KRNT) Stocks Shoot Up 25% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable

Kornit Digital Ltd. (NASDAQ:KRNT) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 25% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The bad news is that even after the stocks recovery in the last 30 days, shareholders are still underwater by about 8.6% over the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, given around half the companies in the United States' Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.4x, you may consider Kornit Digital as a stock to avoid entirely with its 4.4x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Kornit Digital's Recent Performance Look Like?

Kornit Digital could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

Kornit Digital's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 19% decrease to the company's top line. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 14% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 12% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 4.1% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Kornit Digital is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does Kornit Digital's P/S Mean For Investors?

Kornit Digital's P/S has grown nicely over the last month thanks to a handy boost in the share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our look into Kornit Digital shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
