JE Cleantech Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:JCSE) Surges 26% Yet Its Low P/E Is No Reason For Excitement

The JE Cleantech Holdings Limited (NASDAQ:JCSE) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 44% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 17x, you may still consider JE Cleantech Holdings as an attractive investment with its 11.9x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at JE Cleantech Holdings over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is JE Cleantech Holdings' Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like JE Cleantech Holdings' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 59%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 76% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 12% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we are not surprised that JE Cleantech Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, we think shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From JE Cleantech Holdings' P/E?

JE Cleantech Holdings' stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of JE Cleantech Holdings revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
