Broadwind, Inc. (NASDAQ:BWEN) Surges 86% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

The Broadwind, Inc. (NASDAQ:BWEN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 86%. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 8.1% isn't as attractive.

Even after such a large jump in price, Broadwind may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Electrical industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.8x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Broadwind's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Broadwind could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Broadwind would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 4.6% gain to the company's revenues. Revenue has also lifted 5.3% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 14% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 13%, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Broadwind's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Broadwind's P/S?

Broadwind's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It's clear to see that Broadwind maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
