AeroVironment (AVAV) Stock Looks Close To Fair Value Overall

AeroVironment stock has delivered a strong 3 year run, yet its current valuation signals are split, with a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) intrinsic value estimate indicating about 10.3% upside while market based multiples point to a richer pricing and an overall low value score.

  • AeroVironment has returned 95.2% over the past 3 years, which puts recent share price weakness into the context of a much stronger longer term move.
  • The recent collaboration with Applied Intuition on uncrewed teaming software can support expectations for future cash flows, while an ongoing shareholder investigation into potential fiduciary duty breaches may weigh on how investors price risk.
  • The company screens as undervalued on only 2 of 6 valuation checks, so the broader toolkit suggests AeroVironment is not a straightforward bargain.

The issue now is whether the market price for AeroVironment already reflects the intrinsic value implied by cash flow estimates, or if the current gap still leaves a margin of safety.

Find out why AeroVironment's -24.5% return over the last year is lagging behind its peers.

Does AeroVironment Look Undervalued on Cash Flow?

The Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method estimates what AeroVironment is worth today based on projected future cash the business can generate. For AeroVironment, the model starts from latest twelve month free cash flow of about $153.5 million outflow, then assumes cash flows recover and grow over time before settling into a steadier phase.

On these assumptions, the DCF model arrives at an intrinsic value of about $208 per share, which is above the current market price and indicates the stock screens as roughly 10.3% undervalued. The recent shareholder investigation into potential fiduciary duty breaches is one factor that may help explain why the market might still price AeroVironment below what this cash flow view suggests.

On balance, the Discounted Cash Flow estimate suggests that AeroVironment stock appears undervalued relative to its projected cash generation.

Our Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis suggests AeroVironment is undervalued by 10.3%. Track this in your watchlist or portfolio, or discover 51 more high quality undervalued stocks.

Does AeroVironment Look Pricey on Sales?

P/S is a useful lens for AeroVironment because investors often focus on revenue traction in defense technology companies where earnings can be uneven.

AeroVironment trades on a P/S ratio of about 4.8x, which is in line with the broader Aerospace & Defense industry average of roughly 4.8x and close to peer levels. However, a more tailored fair P/S ratio for AeroVironment that factors in its growth profile, margins, size and risk is estimated at about 2.6x.

This fair ratio suggests the current market price reflects a richer sales multiple than the company-specific fundamentals alone would indicate. The stock also sits near the peer average, so the apparent premium arises more from the modelled fair value than from a large gap to the sector.

On this P/S framework, AeroVironment stock appears overvalued relative to the sales multiple implied by its fundamentals.

The Bottom Line

AeroVironment sits between an intrinsic value view that points to some upside based on Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) and market multiples that flag the stock as overvalued on sales. That gap comes down to what you place more weight on. The DCF leans on future cash generation, while the richer P/S ratio reflects current growth expectations and sector sentiment. With the broader valuation checks still weak, the key question is whether AeroVironment can convert its pipeline and partnerships into durable cash flows that justify both the intrinsic value estimate and the market’s higher revenue multiple, despite governance and contract risks.

Between 2003 and 2011, gold nearly went 5x. Dollar went weak too. The gold companies did bad. It is worth noting that between 2003 and 2011, there was 2008! I will leave it your inference and research.
