Market forces rained on the parade of Blue Foundry Bancorp (NASDAQ:BLFY) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for next year. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as the analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.

Following the downgrade, the consensus from dual analysts covering Blue Foundry Bancorp is for revenues of US$38m in 2024, implying a concerning 21% decline in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are supposed to balloon 329% to US$0.72 per share. Yet prior to the latest estimates, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$46m and losses of US$0.56 per share in 2024. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to next year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.

The consensus price target fell 7.1% to US$8.13, with the analysts clearly concerned about the company following the weaker revenue and earnings outlook.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 17% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2024. That is a notable change from historical growth of 15% over the last three years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 4.4% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that Blue Foundry Bancorp's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to note from this downgrade is that the consensus increased its forecast losses next year, suggesting all may not be well at Blue Foundry Bancorp. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. Given the scope of the downgrades, it would not be a surprise to see the market become more wary of the business.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have analyst estimates for Blue Foundry Bancorp going out as far as 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
