Earnings are growing at Aptiv (NYSE:APTV) but shareholders still don't like its prospects
If you are building a properly diversified stock portfolio, the chances are some of your picks will perform badly. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) shareholders. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 51% drop in the share price over that period. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 25% lower in that time. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 9.0% in a month.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.
View our latest analysis for Aptiv
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Although the share price is down over three years, Aptiv actually managed to grow EPS by 83% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
Revenue is actually up 12% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. It's probably worth investigating Aptiv further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective
Investors in Aptiv had a tough year, with a total loss of 25%, against a market gain of about 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.3% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Aptiv (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
