XPEL (NASDAQ:XPEL) Is Investing Its Capital With Increasing Efficiency
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, the ROCE of XPEL (NASDAQ:XPEL) looks great, so lets see what the trend can tell us.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for XPEL, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.33 = US$52m ÷ (US$188m - US$32m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
Therefore, XPEL has an ROCE of 33%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 13% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For XPEL Tell Us?
Investors would be pleased with what's happening at XPEL. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 33%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 902% more capital is being employed now too. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
One more thing to note, XPEL has decreased current liabilities to 17% of total assets over this period, which effectively reduces the amount of funding from suppliers or short-term creditors. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.
What We Can Learn From XPEL's ROCE
To sum it up, XPEL has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific.
