Why You Should Care About XPEL's (NASDAQ:XPEL) Strong Returns On Capital
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So, when we ran our eye over XPEL's (NASDAQ:XPEL) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for XPEL, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.33 = US$59m ÷ (US$208m - US$28m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
So, XPEL has an ROCE of 33%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 12% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
It's hard not to be impressed by XPEL's returns on capital. The company has consistently earned 33% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 937% in that time. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If these trends can continue, it wouldn't surprise us if the company became a multi-bagger.
On a side note, XPEL has done well to reduce current liabilities to 13% of total assets over the last five years. This can eliminate some of the risks inherent in the operations because the business has less outstanding obligations to their suppliers and or short-term creditors than they did previously.
Our Take On XPEL's ROCE
In the end, the company has proven it can reinvest it's capital at high rates of returns, which you'll remember is a trait of a multi-bagger. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 1,457% return they've received over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
