Did China Container Terminal's (TPE:2613) Share Price Deserve to Gain 37%?
China Container Terminal Corporation (TPE:2613) shareholders have seen the share price descend 14% over the month. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 37%, less than the market return of 124%.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
China Container Terminal's earnings per share are down 11% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 1.0% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. In contrast revenue growth of 3.1% per year is probably viewed as evidence that China Container Terminal is growing, a real positive. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of China Container Terminal, it has a TSR of 51% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
China Container Terminal provided a TSR of 34% over the year (including dividends). That's fairly close to the broader market return. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 9%. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand China Container Terminal better, we need to consider many other factors.
