The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From AVer Information Inc.'s (TWSE:3669) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 28%

AVer Information Inc. (TWSE:3669) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 28% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The last month has meant the stock is now only up 5.0% during the last year.

Even after such a large drop in price, AVer Information's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.9x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Taiwan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 23x and even P/E's above 40x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

AVer Information has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is AVer Information's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as AVer Information's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 25% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 71% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 23% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that AVer Information's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From AVer Information's P/E?

AVer Information's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that AVer Information maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with AVer Information, and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
