Aten International (TPE:6277) Will Will Want To Turn Around Its Return Trends
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at Aten International (TPE:6277), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Aten International is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = NT$608m ÷ (NT$7.5b - NT$2.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
Therefore, Aten International has an ROCE of 11%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 11%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Aten International, we didn't gain much confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 11% from 22% five years ago. On the other hand, the company has been employing more capital without a corresponding improvement in sales in the last year, which could suggest these investments are longer term plays. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
In Conclusion...
To conclude, we've found that Aten International is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Since the stock has gained an impressive 73% over the last five years, investors must think there's better things to come. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
