The Returns At WinMate (TPE:3416) Provide Us With Signs Of What's To Come

If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at WinMate's (TPE:3416) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.

What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for WinMate, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.13 = NT$272m ÷ (NT$2.6b - NT$472m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).

So, WinMate has an ROCE of 13%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Electronic industry average of 10% it's much better.

Historical performance is a great place to start when researching a stock so above you can see the gauge for WinMate's ROCE against it's prior returns. If you want to delve into the historical earnings, revenue and cash flow of WinMate, check out these free graphs here.

The Trend Of ROCE

While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 13% and the business has deployed 35% more capital into its operations. Since 13% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.

The Bottom Line

The main thing to remember is that WinMate has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 68% to shareholders over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
