Would Shareholders Who Purchased Chenming Electronic Technology's (TPE:3013) Stock Three Years Be Happy With The Share price Today?
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Chenming Electronic Technology Corporation (TPE:3013) share price up 15% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 33% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the three years that the share price fell, Chenming Electronic Technology's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 14% each year. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 12% per year. That suggests that the market sentiment around the company hasn't changed much over that time, despite the disappointment. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Chenming Electronic Technology, it has a TSR of -28% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Chenming Electronic Technology shareholders gained a total return of 4.4% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 1.0% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Chenming Electronic Technology better, we need to consider many other factors.
