Investors Who Bought Comtrend (GTSM:8089) Shares A Year Ago Are Now Up 89%
It hasn't been the best quarter for Comtrend Corporation (GTSM:8089) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 13% in that time. But that doesn't change the reality that over twelve months the stock has done really well. Looking at the full year, the company has easily bested an index fund by gaining 89%.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Comtrend was able to grow EPS by 52% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 89% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Comtrend's TSR for the last year was 94%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Comtrend shareholders should be happy with the total gain of 94% over the last twelve months, including dividends. We regret to report that the share price is down 13% over ninety days. Shorter term share price moves often don't signify much about the business itself. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Comtrend better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Comtrend , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
