Shareholders Of Fuzetec Technology (GTSM:6642) Must Be Happy With Their 89% Return
One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. For example, Fuzetec Technology Co., Ltd. (GTSM:6642) shareholders have seen the share price rise 64% over three years, well in excess of the market return (38%, not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 31% in the last year , including dividends .

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During three years of share price growth, Fuzetec Technology achieved compound earnings per share growth of 7.0% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 18% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Fuzetec Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was 89%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Over the last year Fuzetec Technology shareholders have received a TSR of 31%. While you don't go broke making a profit, this return was actually lower than the average market return of about 39%. On the bright side that gain is actually better than the average return of 24% over the last three years, implying that the company is doing better recently. If the business can justify the share price gain with improving fundamental data, then there could be more gains to come. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Fuzetec Technology better, we need to consider many other factors.
