It hasn't been the best quarter for Ways Technical Corp., Ltd. (GTSM:3508) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 13% in that time. But over three years, the returns would have left most investors smiling To wit, the share price did better than an index fund, climbing 50% during that period.

Because Ways Technical made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last 3 years Ways Technical saw its revenue grow at 3.6% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. In that time the share price is up 15% per year, which is not unreasonable given the revenue gorwth. Ultimately, the important thing is whether the company is trending to profitability. Given the market doesn't seem too excited about the stock, a closer look at the financial data could pay off, if you can find indications of a stronger growth trend in the future.

A Different Perspective

Ways Technical shareholders are down 26% for the year, but the market itself is up 18%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 0.9% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
