Did You Participate In Any Of Forcecon Technology's (GTSM:3483) Incredible 561% Return?

Forcecon Technology Co., Ltd. (GTSM:3483) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 25% in the last quarter. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). In that time, the share price has soared some 517% higher! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.

Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the five years of share price growth, Forcecon Technology moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Forcecon Technology share price is up 221% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 85% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 48% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Forcecon Technology, it has a TSR of 561% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Forcecon Technology shareholders are up 3.8% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 46% per year for five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Forcecon Technology (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
