Are Utechzone's (GTSM:3455) Statutory Earnings A Good Guide To Its Underlying Profitability?
Broadly speaking, profitable businesses are less risky than unprofitable ones. That said, the current statutory profit is not always a good guide to a company's underlying profitability. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Utechzone (GTSM:3455).
It's good to see that over the last twelve months Utechzone made a profit of NT$92.3m on revenue of NT$1.94b. Below, you can see that both its revenue and its profit have fallen over the last three years.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. This article, will discuss how a tax benefit impacted Utechzone's most recent profit results. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. An Unusual Tax Situation
Utechzone reported a tax benefit of NT$45m, which is well worth noting. It's always a bit noteworthy when a company is paid by the tax man, rather than paying the tax man. Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. In the likely event the tax benefit is not repeated, we'd expect to see its statutory profit levels drop, at least in the absence of strong growth. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Utechzone's Profit Performance
Utechzone reported that it received a tax benefit, rather than paid tax, in its last report. As a result we don't think its profit result, which includes that tax-boost, is a good guide to its sustainable profit levels. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Utechzone's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Utechzone at this point in time.
