Panjit International's (TWSE:2481) Dividend Is Being Reduced To NT$1.20
Panjit International Inc. (TWSE:2481) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to NT$1.20 on the 30th of August. This means that the annual payment is 2.2% of the current stock price, which is lower than what the rest of the industry is paying.

Panjit International's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Prior to this announcement, Panjit International's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 93.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Panjit International's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from NT$1.00 total annually to NT$1.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.3% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. However, Panjit International's EPS was effectively flat over the past five years, which could stop the company from paying more every year.
Our Thoughts On Panjit International's Dividend
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Panjit International is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
