E-Life Corporation (TWSE:6281) Stock Goes Ex-Dividend In Just Three Days

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see E-Life Corporation (TWSE:6281) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date is commonly two business days before the record date, which is the cut-off date for shareholders to be present on the company's books to be eligible for a dividend payment. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade can take two business days or more to settle. Therefore, if you purchase E-Life's shares on or after the 21st of March, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 24th of April.

The company's next dividend payment will be NT$4.00 per share. Last year, in total, the company distributed NT$4.00 to shareholders. Looking at the last 12 months of distributions, E-Life has a trailing yield of approximately 5.0% on its current stock price of NT$80.70. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! So we need to investigate whether E-Life can afford its dividend, and if the dividend could grow.

See our latest analysis for E-Life

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. It paid out 89% of its earnings as dividends last year, which is not unreasonable, but limits reinvestment in the business and leaves the dividend vulnerable to a business downturn. It could become a concern if earnings started to decline. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. Thankfully its dividend payments took up just 26% of the free cash flow it generated, which is a comfortable payout ratio.

It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies that aren't growing their earnings can still be valuable, but it is even more important to assess the sustainability of the dividend if it looks like the company will struggle to grow. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. That explains why we're not overly excited about E-Life's flat earnings over the past five years. Better than seeing them fall off a cliff, for sure, but the best dividend stocks grow their earnings meaningfully over the long run. A payout ratio of 89% looks like a tacit signal from management that reinvestment opportunities in the business are low. In line with limited earnings growth in recent years, this is not the most appealing combination.

The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. In the last 10 years, E-Life has lifted its dividend by approximately 1.3% a year on average.

The Bottom Line

From a dividend perspective, should investors buy or avoid E-Life? Earnings per share have been flat and E-Life's dividend payouts are within reasonable limits; without a sharp decline in earnings we feel that the dividend is likely somewhat sustainable. Overall, it's not a bad combination, but we feel that there are likely more attractive dividend prospects out there.

In light of that, while E-Life has an appealing dividend, it's worth knowing the risks involved with this stock. Case in point: We've spotted 1 warning sign for E-Life you should be aware of.
