YFY (TPE:1907) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 160% Total Return On Their Investment
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For example, the YFY Inc. (TPE:1907) share price has soared 117% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 38% gain in the last three months. This could be related to the recent financial results, released recently - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, YFY achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 35% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 17% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 8.38 also suggests market apprehension.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It is of course excellent to see how YFY has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at YFY's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, YFY's TSR for the last 5 years was 160%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that YFY shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 87% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 21%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand YFY better, we need to consider many other factors.
