FarGlory HotelLtd's (TWSE:2712) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
FarGlory Hotel Co.,Ltd (TWSE:2712) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 16th of August to NT$0.4181. Although the dividend is now higher, the yield is only 1.4%, which is below the industry average.

FarGlory HotelLtd's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Before making this announcement, FarGlory HotelLtd was paying out quite a large proportion of both earnings and cash flow, with the dividend being 564% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 23.7% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 66%, which would make us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend, despite the levels currently being quite high.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was NT$0.55 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was NT$0.418. This works out to be a decline of approximately 2.7% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
FarGlory HotelLtd's Dividend Might Lack Growth
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. FarGlory HotelLtd has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 24% per annum. EPS is growing rapidly, although the company is also paying out a large portion of its profits as dividends. If earnings keep growing, the dividend may be sustainable, but generally we'd prefer to see a fast growing company reinvest in further growth.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In general, the distributions are a little bit higher than we would like, but we can't ignore the fact the quickly growing earnings gives this stock great potential in the future. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
