On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Over the last year the Kanpai Co., Ltd (GTSM:1269) share price is up 63%, but that's less than the broader market return. Zooming out, the stock is actually down 55% in the last three years.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the last year, Kanpai actually saw its earnings per share drop 65%. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.
However the year on year revenue growth of 7.3% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Kanpai the TSR over the last year was 67%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Kanpai shareholders are up 67% for the year (even including dividends). It's always nice to make money but this return falls short of the market return which was about 83% for the year. The silver lining is that the recent rise is far preferable to the annual loss of 15% that shareholders have suffered over the last three years. We hope the turnaround in fortunes continues. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
