Sanitar (TWSE:1817) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
Sanitar Co., Ltd. (TWSE:1817) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to NT$1.80 on the 26th of July. However, the dividend yield of 4.5% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Sanitar's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Based on the last payment, Sanitar was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 2.6% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 48%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of NT$1.60 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of NT$1.80. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 1.2% over that duration. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings has been rising at 2.6% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Growth of 2.6% per annum is not particularly high, which might explain why the company is paying out a higher proportion of earnings. This isn't bad in itself, but unless earnings growth pick up we wouldn't expect dividends to grow either.
In Summary
Overall, while it's not great to see that the dividend has been cut, we think the company is now in a good position to make consistent payments going into the future. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
