Did Business Growth Power Ace Pillar's (TPE:8374) Share Price Gain of 174%?
When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For instance, the price of Ace Pillar Co., Ltd. (TPE:8374) stock is up an impressive 174% over the last five years. On the other hand, the stock price has retraced 5.2% in the last week.

We don't think that Ace Pillar's modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. It would be hard to believe in a more profitable future without growing revenues.
Over the last half decade Ace Pillar's revenue has actually been trending down at about 6.0% per year. On the other hand, the share price done the opposite, gaining 22%, compound, each year. It just goes to show tht the market is forward looking, and it's not always easy to predict the future based on past trends. Still, this situation makes us a little wary of the stock.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Ace Pillar's TSR for the last 5 years was 191%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Ace Pillar shareholders are up 33% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 24% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy.
