Reflecting on CyberPower Systems' (TPE:3617) Share Price Returns Over The Last Year
While not a mind-blowing move, it is good to see that the CyberPower Systems, Inc. (TPE:3617) share price has gained 16% in the last three months. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. After all, the share price is down 20% in the last year, significantly under-performing the market.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Unhappily, CyberPower Systems had to report a 58% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price fall of 20% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So despite the weak per-share profits, some investors are probably relieved the situation wasn't more difficult.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of CyberPower Systems, it has a TSR of -15% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, CyberPower Systems shareholders lost 15% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that CyberPower Systems is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is concerning...
